GREETINGS FROM CARRA

a work in process

the pitch

My name is Carra Sykes I want to make neat things and stuff. Ever since I could pick up a writing utensil, I've been drawing and making. I want to build my skill-set through various forms of exploration and give back to the community by sharing helpful knowledge. The work should be fun and inviting, but also make people think. A picture book is a residency goal, but there is so much more that will be created. Things may get messy, but let's embrace that part of us. The only way to start is to actually start. We have to keep creative.

THE PROCESS

  A. EXPERIENCE: Research takes many forms. One of the best ways to research is to get out of the house and see things first hand. When I was a kid, I learned so much from taking field trips and meeting people who were different from me.

  B. SKETCH AND DOCUMENT EVERYTHING: I will challenge myself to fill up at least one sketch book every month through this exploration. Continuously sketching and filling sketchbooks will help me grow alongside of research and other things.

  C. SHARE: This is where I share my process and series of work via social media.   Whether it's sharing process and inspiration through Instagram Stories or Instagram Live, I will make sure to engage with the creative community. I will also try new ways of using the different tools on Instagram, like creating a visual story with the swipe feature. You don't have to live in a large city to make an impact as a creative. Social media is an incredible way to connect when working away from other creatives. I will catalogue everything into my blog on carrasykes.com (the site you are on currently, go to "work in process" tab and that's where you'll find a small dose of a blog)

  D. PICTURE BOOK: After meeting people in their process and exploring mine, everything will come together as a tangible picture book that tells a meaningful story. This won't be the only thing I create along the way, but it is a dream of mine to make a children's book and I feel the goal will push me to create my best work. Most of my work has been digital, it's time to see these things in action inside AND outside of a screen!

GO SEE NEAT THINGS - LEARN FROM EXPERIENCE

ooy.jpg

Throughout the year of residency, I will build a series of visual experimentations that stretch imagination and explore work in process. I will take field trips to meet with people in different fields to study their processes. Through experiences and a trust in the practice, I will create visuals that share stories and embrace the possible awkward. Whether that’s looking at things that exist and see them in a different way or using imagination to push the limits of how we naturally think.

FIELD TRIP IDEAS

TYPES OF OCCUPATIONS I COULD SHADOW FOR A SHORT TIME PERIOD TO LEARN A DIFFERENT APPROACH TO PROCESS:

  • Astronaut
  • Chief
  • Soccer Player
  • Brewmaster
  • Yoga Instructor

The "GO SEE NEAT THINGS" is an image from my side project OF OUR YOUTH where I sew banners and other things. Photographed by Lauren Marek.

IF I STILL HAD MYSPACE, THESE CREATIVE PEOPLE WOULD BE SOMEWHERE IN MY TOP 8

MARGARET KILGALLEN - I miss Margaret and I never even met her. She seems like she was so genuine and authentic with her work. There is a moment in the documentary Beautiful Losers where Margaret talks about the imperfections of the human hand and how beautiful they are. I think about this often. OLIVER JEFFERS - My goodness this man can tell a story! And also his work on his Instagram is so current and speaks his beliefs. I want to tell stories like he does, but with my own voice. (Photo found on Google, Courtesy of Janis Curry/HarperCollins)

GEOFF MCFETRIDGE  - I love the way Geoff sees things. His combination of design and illustration feels very relatable. I've seen where he uses what seems like Adobe Illustrator before painting some of his paintings to figure out color and layout. I do the same thing for some pieces that I take analog after messing around in digital. His work is SO FUN. I want my work to be that fun. (Photo found on Google, taken by Brigitte Sire )

ST. VINCENT - She's all around a bad ass woman. Everything she does makes me want to make art and push to be a visionary. (Photo by Lauren Marek )
